Fear, Feminism and Fury!
Asked on Quora:
I love the idea of feminism and I like to support it in any way I can, but for some reason, whenever I hear anyone promoting it, I get really pissed off. Does anyone feel this way? What is the explanation for this?
Answer by Tamra Coveau:
The "idea" of feminism and the "reality" of that philosophy are indeed two very different things. What is triggering your feelings of anger? Perhaps you are aware of the incongruity between living something and professing something in theory. Feminism is about realizing that equality for everybody.
Feminism is beneficial for society as a whole, and it is the right of every individual to be free from gender/race/religion/etc. discrimination. However, there are many challenges that still need to be faced, if we are to have true feminism.
This is an ideal that patriarchal societies are far from realizing, but there is progress. Sometimes as we become more aware of our own belief patterns that have been formed and entrenched in a sexist society or family, we become aware of an increasing cognitive dissonance, between what we thought was normal and what we realize is an imposition and it can be quite unsettling.
Explore your feelings, journal, talk to friends, research the feminist movement, including it's roots and struggles.
